L'Ombre et la MainChronicle of a Restoration
Jean Broc’s painting, The School of Apelles, remain rolled up for more than a century in the reserves of the Louvre. In the restoration workshops at Versailles, Anne Lepage and her two collaborators spent six months filming the restoration process of this large 215 square foot canvas. Broc was a student of David’s. He joined David’s atelier just after the Revolution and was part of a group called The Primitives, of which The School of Apelles is the only remaining trace. At the end of the restoration work, the painting is there in its entirety ready for exhibition. It is wrapped and transferred to the Louvre.
