L'Asile du droit

An Asylum for Human Rights

In 2006, more than 40,000 men, children and women fled away from their country, seeking for asylum in France, according to the 1951 Geneva Convention. As soon as they arrived, they called for The French Protecting Refugees Board, which is in charge to grant them the statute. 92% have been rejected.
Then they can get a “second chance” by appealing the so-called Refugee Appeals Board, based in Montreuil-sous-Bois, next to Paris. This is an independant and then the most important Court in France, regards to the number of cases submitted each year. Non professionnal magistrates are in charge of these commissions.

Over this year, the RAB denied more than four thousand decisions to the FPRB, that means 14%. 7,354 refugees received asylum.
The film is showing how 5 asylum seekers are commanded to make available the documents and tangible things designated to permit the Commission to be sure their life was really in danger in their home country. They are assisted by a lawyer and a translator. After 30 minutes the story ended and the waiting starts. On a big white wall, in the waiting room, they look for their name ...
