L'Affaire Ben BarkaBen Barka
October 29th, 1965, Mehdi Ben Barka, leader of the opposition to King Hassan II of Morocco, is in Paris. He is the future president of the upcoming Tricontinental Conference (a gathering of freedom movements for the people of Asia, Africa and Latin America). He is supposed to meet today at the Brasserie Lipp with the authors of a political documentary who asked for his contribution. He feels safe in France and didn't ask for any police protection.
Ben Barka is heading towards the Brasserie Lipp with a Moroccan student who works as his assistant, when two French policemen stop him. They take him aside and talk. The student eventually sees Ben Barka agreeing to get in the police car. They drive away. It will be the last time that Ben Barka was ever seen alive. Three days later, the press announces the abduction and the disappearance of the Moroccan leader. One of the most disgraceful scandals of the French Fifth Republic has begun.
