Illégitime cautionIllegitimate Guarantee
On April 21, 2002, the French left, and the Socialist Party in particular, was eliminated in the first ballot of the presidential elections. Instead, the National Front was in the runoff election, which led to a republican élan in favor of Jacques Chirac, elected with a landslide 82% of the vote, supported by the parties of the left. The left expected to figure in a national unity government. But in giving the prime minister’s portfolio to Jean-Pierre Raffarin, then vice president of the Liberal Democratic Party, the French president delegitimized the demands of the Left. This film looks back on the second five-year term under the Fifth Republic.
