Said loved things well done, the French language and its riches, dictionaries, and beauty in all its forms. He loved being a good student. But that was before. Long ago, last year. Before Camille-Claudel High School, the crowd screaming with its 1,200 students, the racketeering, the fatigue, the contempt and hatred of those who want to kill anything beautiful. At school, Said changed. It’s not that he doesn’t want to succeed anymore, he still does, with all his might. But that is waning. All alone, he knows he’ll never make it. So he clings to what he can: an outing in town, a painting at the museum, his friend Antoine who is completely immersed in culture.
