I Hear a Rainbow
A major figure in the New York jazz scene since the 1950's, Arnie Lawrence performed with greats ranging from Stan Getz, Dizzy Gillepsie, Elvis Presley to Liza Minnelli. Following the foudation of the New School of Jazz in New York City, he moves to Israël in the 1990's where he initiates musical gatherings between young Israelis and Palestinians in Jerusalem and in Haifa. The film tracks turning points in Lawrence's life through interviews with collaborators like Sonny Rollins, friends and family. Particularly unforgettable are moments with Lawrence himself, which stands against the disease devastating his body. Simultaneous with immersing the viewer in an overview of the jazz world through the contributions of one of its most charismatic figures of our time, the film is also a meditation on human mortality.
