Dear Archie,
You’re 70 years old today and you look the same as the day we first met 25 years ago in that corridor of the Chatelet Theater; I was immediately taken with your bearing, the way you moved like a dancer. I didn’t know you, I went up to you and I heard myself ask, “Mr. Shepp, how about if we made a movie together? A movie about jazz...” And I heard you answer, “I don’t much care for that word, jazz; it’s a word that was born in the whorehouses of New Orleans. But I like movies, so why not?” And you roared with laughter. Since that time, we’ve continually shared musical, theatrical and cinematic adventures. With this film, I go back in time along memory lane to pick up the trail of this story that began 25 years ago.
