Gekiryu chugoku Aru Zasshi Henshu-bu 60-nichi no KoubouChina in a Torrent : Media Tug-of-War
Newspapers and magazines in China were once published only by the Communist Party and government. Amid new reforms and openness, they’ve become financially independent and are allowed to have diverse designs and content to attract readers. Moreover, they have begun to want freedom of expression. Even so, they still face restrictions placed on information by the authorities. How far can they go to deliver the information the public wants? Chinese news magazine Nan Feng Chuang allowed NHK to observe its staff for two months. The magazine has achieved the highest readership in China by tackling challenging issues, but the work of its reporters and editors is fraught with conflict. NHK follows a young reporter trying to break the taboo on reporting of real-estate disputes in China; an older reporter trying to shed light on secret trafficking of young women to rural villages, and the magazine’s editor-in-chief, who has to manage his team’s efforts without falling foul of government censors.
