Fu QinBrave Father
2002. Shengli, son of Han Peiyin, leaves his countryside to attend the University of Xi’an. To pay for his studies, Han has sold all his property and gone to work in Xi’an. Though he is a simple peasant, he is convinced that learning provides one with the power to change one’s life and he hopes his son will succeed. But finding work for a peasant is not easy and the competition is increasingly tough. Han barely manages to earn 400 yuans a month and university costs Shengli 9,000 yuans a year. At night, a brick is his pillow. At nightfall, his son wonders how he’s going to eat. Graduation day arrives. For a shy young man like Shengli, the prospects seem slight. Despite his education, he could end up earning less than his father. Han keeps a diary, notes down his debts and hopes. On one page he has written: "Around 2013, when I will be approaching 60, Shengli will take our family to Peking for a guided visit. Then we’ll have plenty of money."
