Frauen im KnastWomen Behind Bars
In German prisons, only about five per cent of the inmates are women. However, the proportion of women prisoners has trebled in the last ten years. The reasons are more energetic crime detection measures, more frequent remand-in-custody orders, and longer sentences.
The film focuses on the prisoners Julietta, Monika and Ingeborg, inmates in the women's section of Ossendorf prison in Cologne. Three of about 300 women aged between 15 and 68. For four months, in the autumn and winter of 2006, permission was given for the everyday lives of the female inmates of the jail to be filmed without obstacles and without conditions being imposed. The crimes for which the three women had been sentenced (bank robbery, manslaughter, theft) are only mentioned in passing. The film is concerned with their lives after the crime, their everyday lives in jail.
