Elles et moi

January 1939. The fall of Barcelona concludes the defeat of the Spanish Republicans. 500,000 of them choose exile. Arriving in France, the men are disarmed and interned in camps. As for families, the government divides them up in makeshift centers, several of them in the Ardèche region. The film follows the fate of the Esteva family during these terrible months and ensuing five years of war. Lluis, the father, won’t admit defeat and lives in the hope of a new victory. Pilar, his wife, tries mainly to survive in this new country she senses will be her home for a long time. With her children, Isabel and Ignacio, in the Ardèche then in Marseille, she shares the ordeal of a society undermined by defeat and collaboration, endowed as she is with courage and a prodigious ability to adapt.
