For their 35th wedding anniversary, Herbert and Maria Schubert extend a weekend invitation to their entire family: their respective children and their spouses, their grandchildren, as well as their grandmother, Rita, who is desperately seeking to remember the last song to which she and her late husband had danced. As their children's marital problems crop up, Herbert and Maria are themselves faced with questions: Maria has decided to choose between her lover, the charming Dr. Gregor, and her husband, unaware that the latter, who knows about her affair, will do anything to win her back. At the end of the weekend, just when Maria finally decides to remain with Herbert, Rita dies. When the family is again reunited for the funeral, Mark, Maria's son, finally comes up with the title to the song: "Copacabana."
