Clémentine
A lawyer, Moineau, remembers the story of a former client: Clementine. Youngest child in a poor family, she was abused by her father at the age of 14 and forced into prostitution by her brother, Paulin. When he died, she fled Paris. It was the Occupation. One night, she was out walking after curfew, and was arrested by the police and taken to Drancy, where she met a young woman, Claude. Deported to a camp in Germany, the two women gave totally of themselves to aid their fellow prisoners, saving the lives of dozens of women. Claude died, but Clementine, despite her grief, carried on. Returning to Paris, she met a youth she supported. During an identity check, she wounded a policeman. She and her protégé were arrested. Despite her heroic conduct during the war, Clementine was sentenced for assault and battery and corruption of a minor. Hearing the harsh verdict, Moineau, her lawyer, summed up her sad life: "Clementine would have been happier in the death camps than among us."
