Claude Chabrol, l'enfant libreClaude Chabrol, the Free Child
We know Claude Chabrol the bon vivant, the agitator, incapable of resisting a clever remark or acting the fool. This film shows us the private man behind the public image. Returning to Sardent, the village in the Creuse where he lived from 1939 to 1945, far from his family back in Paris, Chabrol recalls: his life there, his passion for literature, theatre and, even then, the movies. We discover an independent mentality, deeply affected by this period of disorders, coinciding with his emergence from childhood, a time reflected in his films, notably in its dark tonality and his unceasing hounding of obscurantism, hypocrisy and stupidity. We understand better the paradox between this jovial, urbane man and a cynical, caustic body of work.
