Caravaggio
Michelangelo Merisi was born in the town of Caravaggio, to a family who worked for the Colonnas, a powerful noble house of Milan. At the age of six, Caravaggio pledges eternal love and faithfulness to Costanza Colonna, who will protect and assist him to the end of his days. At twenty, he leaves for Rome, where Cardinal Del Monte, a close friend of Costanza Colonna, becomes his patron, giving the restless, troublemaking painter a chance to work without distraction. But at the height of his success, Caravaggio's love for Fillide Melandroni, a lady of the night, leads him to kill her protector, forcing the artist to flee to Naples. Here, once again under the protection of Costanza Colonna, he obtains major commissions, and is even invited to Malta and made a member of the prestigious Order of the Knights of Malta. But yet another brawl forces him to escape to Sicily. Hunted by the Papal Guards, the vindictive brothers of the first man he killed and now the Knights of Malta, Caravaggio works at a feverish pace, as if fleeing impending doom. Meanwhile powerful friends are working to persuade the Pope to pardon him. Caravaggio manages to return to Naples, where his love for Costanza Colonna, a sentiment suspended between the two since childhood, finally becomes reality…
