Bernard Foccroulle, un engagement pour l'opéra
Bernard Foccroulle is an opera house director with an unusual background. Organist and composer, trained at the Royal Music Conservatory in Liege, outstanding world rank performer of baroque and contemporary music, he was named head of the Theatre Royal de la Monnaie in 1993 at age 39. Here, in one of Europe's most prestigious opera houses, Foccroule developed his vision of opera as "a total and collective art form, the embodiment of an Utopian quest" and an art accessible to all.
Inspired by this combat, he created an educational department and opened the theatre to different audiences. Using archive footage, scenes from productions and the accounts of leading artists, the film is a portrait of a man. He talks about his vision of art and his daring program choices. President of Opera Europa, he has championed the For a Europe based on its culture manifesto. In 2007, he was named director of the Aix-en-Provence festival.
