...wo ich noch nie war... where I've never been before
How can the beauty of art and artistic credibility exist in a world dominated by mass culture? This film is a portrait of composer Helmut Lachenmann. We see him at work with the musicians of the Ensemble Modern for the world premiere of his Concertini at the Lucerne Festival, as well as with the Ensemble intercontemporain, pianist Yukiko Sugawara, the Lotus String Quartet and the Jack Quartet. Lachenmann never stops pondering his own composition methods and the "acoustical materials" he uses. His orchestrations demand a subtle intellectual approach from his interpreters and great technical virtuosity. Helmut Lachenmann ponders the way he can reach new venues he has never been to.
