If in days of old, the king’s library could be contained in a chest which he took with him on his travels, the French National Library (BNF) today houses millions of works: printed materials, manuscripts, engravings, photographs, videotapes. It missions are various: to preserve and enrich the collection, naturally, but also to digitize them, put on them display and give them new life. For the 10th anniversary of the opening of the new Tolbiac site, the filmmaker takes us on a journey into the heart of the Bibliothèque Nationale de France: books lead to persons, crafts, queries, et vice versa. Neither a catalogue nor an instruction manual, the film suggests an endless course, which it shall remain. It should be an invitation, a way of provoking a desire, a different dream of knowledge.
