Un génocide à huis clos

A Secret Genocide

Southern Myanmar (Burma) is off-limits to foreigners. This is the state of the Karen, an ethnic minority persecuted by the Burmese government. For the past 60 years, the KNLA, the Karen National Liberation Army, has been waging a desperate war throughout this hostile jungle against the military junta in power. The Burmese generals decided to proceed to the ethnic cleansing of Karen land. The SPDC, the Burmese army, concentrates on civilian targets. Entire battalions have attacked villages, its soldiers burning, pillaging, raping, executing and torturing the local population. Than Shwe, the head of the junta, decided to transfer the capital from Rangoon to Pynmana, a small provincial city in the north of the Karen state. Since then the Burmese army has stepped up its offensives, creating a humanitarian disaster of terrible proportions. 300,000 Karen refugees are now trying to survive in the 600 miles of mountains that rim the Thai border. The refugee population suffers from hunger, mines and malaria. We secretly entered Myanmar and followed the Karen combatants for several weeks to bear witness to an “in camera” genocide
