Un chant nègre - Léopold Sédar Senghor
A great political figure, Léopold Sédar Senghor stood up as a poet to champion a simple idea: the Negro is also a person of culture and beauty. Torn between his “negritude” and his love of the French language, the president of the Republic of Senegal chose to live out his last years in France where he became a member of the French Academy. He drew the power of his poetry from the forces of history. His poems sing of Africanism and brotherhood. In this film, contemporary poets and artists talk about Senghor. The film is informed with the “mystery” of African nature: wind and vegetation, light and shadow, rhythms. The basic theme here is the modernity and topicality of Senghor’s philosophy.
