Umini suwaruSit-in on the Sea
In 1995, Japan’s southernmost prefecture, Okinawa, shook with anger. Three U.S. GIs had raped a little girl. During World War II, this island was a battleground and after the war ended was occupied by huge U.S. bases, and for 27 years remained under U.S. rule. And even now that this period was over, damage from the bases and brutal crimes by GIs show no sign of ending. The Japanese and U.S. governments took the matter seriously, and responded by announcing that the Futenma Air Station would be returned. But eventually it was to be merely moved and strengthened in another part of this island. This is how the anti-base struggle in Henoko, Nago City, the site where the new base was to be built, began in 1996.
