Tout ça (ne nous rendra pas la Belgique)
Fiction or reality? On December 13, 2006, the news presenter for Belgian television announced the end of Belgium. The King had decided to step down, the Flemish parliament had declared independence, the tensions between the two communities got the better of the nation. In the evening, a series of declarations and events stemming from the Flemish secession took place. Open-mouthed, TV viewers witnessed the partition of Belgium. Would the Flemings and the Walloons be better neighbors than they had been fellow countrymen? What fate was in store for Brussels, the Belgian capital and seat of European Community institutions? How would they divide the national railways, social coverage, the public debt, the kingdom’s wealth? This first hour of the end of Belgium is a docudrama that forecasts a worst case scenario, to some improbable, to others desirable. Journalists, politicians, economic leaders play themselves on screen, creating a truer-than-life feeling.
