The State Within
The action is set during a two-week period at the British Embassy in Washington. Mark Brydon, the brilliant young ambassador, has only a few days in which to show his skills. When a terrorist bomb downs a British plane in America, the finger of blame points to a British Muslim. The situation worsens when the Governor of Virginia passes emergency legislation allowing the Virginia National Guard to apprehend and imprison all British Asians in the State. Then, a disgraced former British ambassador publicly denounces human rights violations in Tyrgyztan, which his government is overlooking and which put Brydon in a delicate situation because of his good relations with the current president of that country. Things only get worse: in Virginia, a private mercenary army is being raised and bankrolled by a British entrepreneur for an American financier… Gradually, Brydon comes to realize that he is being manipulated. He no longer knows whom he can trust and doesn't know the scope of the conspiracy.
