The Lost City
Beijing is an ancient city with a history of being the capital of five feudal dynasties. Local residents in Beijing used to dwell in Hutongs and Quadrangles, one of the city's architectural heritages. But these historical landmarks are being demolished due to industrialization and modernization. 50 years ago, Liang Si-Cheng and Cheng Zhan-Xiang, famous architects and experts in city planning, proposed a "Liang-Chen plan" and identified an area outside the old district for the development of the central administrative zone, in order to maintain the architecture. Then, in 2004, the government came up with another city plan named "Two axes, two zones and multi-centres", which resembled the plan Liang and Chen proposed. It provides an ideal solution to accommodate the city's heritages and its new development.
