Samba Diabaré Samb, le gardien du temple
Samba Diabaré Samb is the great griot historian-genealogist of Senegal. At 82, he remains the sole guardian of his country's traditions, values and history. He was recently named "Living Human Treasure" by UNESCO. At the same time, Senegal paid him homage last June. A native of Djolof, the historic heart of Senegal, he mixed with members of the royal and religious courts before appearing on radio, television and with the national theater (the National Lyric Ensemble of Senegal) to uphold the independence of Senegal by passing on to the largest audiences possible the history of his country, its great families, and praising the major values which today are often in short supply in the individual and collective behaviors of a population beleaguered by everyday economic problems.
