Rêves de singeThe Lost Magic of the Shanghai Art Studios
At the end of the 1950’s, The Shanghai Art Studio was among the most important in the world. Studio chief, Wang Laiming, had been working for 10 years on the masterpiece of Asian animation The Monkey King, completed at the dawn of the Cultural Revolution when Wang Laiming and director Te Weï (88 years today) were arrested by the Red Guards along with many others. In the mid-80’s the studio attempted a come-back... A film that bears witness to an art, broken by politics and serial production methods.
