Raoul Coutard, de Saïgon à Hollywood
A tribute to those indispensable but underestimated artisans of the art of film: the directors of photography. Behind the camera, they quietly contribute to the making of masterpieces and are only rarely called upon to share their love of their craft with us. This film looks at the extraordinary career of one of the great DOPs through scenes from his major films. Alongside Godard and Truffaut, Raoul Coutard was one of the prime movers of the cinema’s most revolutionary movement: the New Wave. Such films as Breathless, Jules and Jim, La 317ème section, Alphaville and Pierrot le fou have left their mark on entire generations of filmmakers around the world. Costa-Gavras, Jacques Perrin, and Pierre Schoendoerffer talk to us about their experiences with and admiration for this exceptional film artist.
