Poison d'avril
Early March 2002.
Simon is appointed director of information at a TV channel with orders to keep a firm grip on the news team during the presidential election campaign and to improve ratings. He sets down his conditions: full powers. Dreading his arrival, the entire news team is counting on Charles, the evening news editor-in-chief, to curb Simon’s pursuit of higher ratings. But Charles is called away to his father’s bedside and must leave his staff in the hands of this cynical opportunist. He entrusts his news program to Laurence, the deputy news editor, who tries to preserve their professional integrity. From his reluctant exile, Charles watches the excesses of “his channel,” which makes crime and law & order the main topics of political debate. March 2002. All the opinion polls concur: Chirac will lose the elections and Jospin will be elected president on May 5. This campaign interests few people since the outcome seems a foregone conclusion. A major part of left-leaning voters consider abstaining or making a protest vote. Le Pen, ignored by the media, is thinking of not standing, since with less than 8% of voting intentions, his chances are nil.
