Petite Espagne
Next to the Stade de France, in Saint-Denis, just outside Paris, there is a neighborhood of thousands of Spanish immigrants, which began to grow by successive waves in the last century, recreating the ambiance of their native village. This quarter was long known as Little Spain. Today, the quarter is being razed. The Spanish immigrant community appears to have been entirely assimilated. There remains little trace of this Spanish corner in the “red suburbs.” The last place emblematic of its presence in the quarter is El Hogar de los Españoles, where a sign at the entrance reads: "Associates and Spanish only". Here, people meet on Sundays to play dominos and eat el cocido. Accounts and archives evoke the history of the Spanish immigrants of la Plena (“plain” in local jargon), who came mainly from Extremadura and Old-Castille.
