Monsieur Max

February 1944. The Gestapo burst into the abbey at Saint-Benoît-sur-Loire and arrest Max Jacob. A homosexual Jew who had converted to Catholicism, he had been part of the bohemian elite of the Bateau-Lavoir years. He was a close friend of Picasso’s and his constant companion in difficult times. He was also close to Cocteau, Guitry and Jean Marais. He shared their confidences, delights and escapades in the Paris of the interwar years. But then comes 1940. Four years later, he is conducted to Drancy, where thousands of men and women await deportation to Germany. Whereas the world abandoned him, Alice, a young orphan, to whom Max had given his affection when she was a child, sets out to save him.
