Men With the Mountain on Their Shoulders
At a height of 2,160 meters above sea level, world-renowned Mount Huashan in Shaanxi province, China, has long been deemed as one of the five sacred mountains of China. Its steep cliffs and breath-taking scenery contributed to much of its fame. Together with its being historically the location of several influential Taoist monasteries and a centre for practice of traditional Chinese martial arts, Mount Huashan is one of a kind. Among the steep, rugged ridges, live a group of men and women porters who carry goods and supplies to the top of the mountains where even an average tourist climbing to the top carrying nothing is already no easy feat. They all have their stories to tell – most porter to support their families, some to repay debts, and some to prove their worth.
