Mauritania, antiche biblioteche nel desertoMauritania, Ancient Libraries in the Desert
Mauritania was for many centuries a hub of culture in which the acquisition and spread of knowledge was an activity of fundamental importance. The remains of cities like Chinguetti, Ouadane, Tichit and Oualata, classified as world heritage sites by UNESCO, are one of the visible expressions of this rich culture. This was the setting for the foundation of numerous libraries. The thousands of manuscripts collected in them drew intellectuals and students from all over the Arab world. With this documentary, we set out to discover these ancient libraries cities and sound alarm for a civilisation and precious documents imperilled by voracious termites and the inexorable advance of the Sahara.
