Since the discovery of the New World, the history of man has been profoundly marked by the expansionist mind-set of the West: it constantly imposed its economic, political and religious models on societies which, for the most part, failed to survive this contact. Drawing on exceptional documents that reflect our encounters with traditional civilizations, but also throwing open a window of receptivity on artworks produced by these vanished or dying societies, this documentary reviews a tortured history, allowing us to gauge how far we have come towards acknowledging these “other men”, whom we have called primitive for too long.
