Le Vie della recherche
Luchino Visconti recalled that in 1922, when he was 16, his father introduced him to Marcel Proust's Swann's Way. At the time, Proust was still relatively unknown but he found the book so fascinating that he devoured the entire In Search of Lost Time that same year. Visconti re-read Proust several times and three decades later, he told screenwriter Suso Cecchi d'Amico that he wanted to do a film version. The script was ready in March 1971 but the financing proved difficult. After four years of work, just as the project was about to go into production, Visconti suddenly gave up. This documentary shows the major role, if not the influence, of Proust on the life and art of Luchino Visconti. Interweaving archive footage and the reminiscences of his closest collaborators, it explores the different assumptions about the reason for this sudden abandonment. It also tries to imagine what the film would have been like and examines the deep bonds between the art of Visconti and that of Proust.
