Le Roman des années 50
“The shattered body of France.” It was this appraisal by De Gaulle in 1946 that ushered in the 1950s and with it the farewell ceremony to the France of yesteryear. A bereavement for the earth, a bereavement for greatness: France was no longer a major power and its colonial empire was coming apart. The void left by the sudden resignation of the legendary liberator triggered a race to the abyss of parliamentary government: it would mark the end of the Fourth Republic. Everything needed to be rebuilt and reinvented. A mythical decade, the 1950s would see the realization of the most spectacular social, culture and political transformations, indeed the most painful transformations in its history.
