Le Petit Théâtre de Marie-Antoinette
There is, at the Petit Trianon in Versailles, a long forgotten gem of a site: the Little Theater of Marie-Antoinette. It was here that, far from the strict court etiquette of the Chateau, the Queen and her friends would come to put on the plays by their favorite authors. Tonight, this playhouse of wood and pasteboard awakens from a long slumber. The music of Grétry and Gossec will ring out anew. On the miniature stage, the painted backdrops have been restored. The curtain will soon go up so that these relaxed evenings can again work their charm. With the cooperation of Jean-Paul Gousset, technical director of the Little Theater and the Royal Opera of Versailles, and Pierre-André Lablaude, chief architect of the Historical Monuments, Olivier Simonnet invites us to discover this 18th century theater, fitted with period stage machinery and sets dating from the Ancien Regime and complete with stagehands who go through the motions of former times, to revive the memories of a queen who in the light of wax candles, enjoyed casting herself as a shepherdess.
