La Voz
The life of Puerto Rican singer Hector Lavoe. A cult figure of New York salsa scene who died in 1993 at the age of 47, he was venerated all over Latin America as "El Cantante de los cantantes," the singer’s singer. For many, his name means little. But for millions of Latino Americans around the world he is as much a legend as Carlos Gardel or Diego Maradona. He embodied genuine, popular salsa, born and nourished in the street, which echoed daily life and reflected the contradictions of a nation that only exists in song: the Latinos. 13 years after his death, the likes of Willie Colon, Little Louie Vega and Jose Mangual reminisce about this the roving artist and born improviser.
