La Volière aux enfants
In 1835, special wards, called “salles d’asile”, are set up in hundreds of cities around France to cope with the increasing number of very young children left on their own during the day. Marie Carpantier is put in charge of one of them. She quickly takes a liking to her work and the contact with the children but rebels against the orders from the Education Ministry which, in collusion with the clergy and the bourgeoisie, seeks to avoid teaching these children anything more than the rudiments of morality and religion. Marie decides to teach them to read and write, using methods adapted for very young children. She will devote the rest of her life to this undertaking and create an authentic school, the model for the French public nursery school.
