L'Œil de WillemWillem's Eye
Bernhard Willem Holtrop is Dutch but has long been Paris-based. His cartoons can be seen in Libération, Charlie Hebdo and in a Dutch magazine. His is very much the artist's life: a precocious talent, fine arts training, an exclusive career as cartoonist. But he hasn't made it into museums. Which is okay: he couldn't care less. Didier Ottinger, curator at the Pompidou Center, situates Willem in the tradition of the moralist painters of the north, the tradition of Bosch and Breughel. The major question at work in his art is the notion of power. What are its forces, motivations, mechanisms? To Willem, power is always linked to seduction and control exerted over the desire of others.
