L'Occitanienne
The action takes place in Cauterets, at the height of pyreneism, one stormy evening. A night-long encounter between three individuals: the ageing René de Chateaubriand, the young Léontine de Villeneuve, who is filled with passion for the great man, and a steward and poet to the core, who for the occasion, has reluctantly agreed to be the night watchman, a benign voyeur and witness.
Based on a story in Memoires from Beyond the Grave, the subject, which aroused considerable literary and biographical interest in its time, relates the true story of Chateaubriand's last love: a young Toulouse noblewoman, who figures in his writing as the Occitanian.
