In 1993, the trial of Jean-Marie Villemin opened. Nine years earlier, on October 16, 1984, the body of four-year-old Gregory Villemin was fished out of the Vologne River. A few hours earlier, an anonymous caller, who had been plaguing the region for several months with poison pen letters and had been terrorizing the Villemin family, claimed responsibility for the kidnapping.
