Kinder des ProphetenChildren of the Prophet
Imam Hossein was the grandson of the prophet Mohammad, and each year, Shiite Muslims grandly commemorate his death as a martyr in 680 A.D. This film follows four different groups of Shiites in contemporary Tehran during the 10-day Moharram mourning period, which concludes with commemorative festivities called Ashura. The Islamic Republic of Iran has by far the most Shiites in the Muslim world, and no other country practises the rituals like Iran. Children of the Prophet looks at the Moharram from the perspective of average citizens of Teheran: a rare intimate insight into Shiite beliefs as well as life in contemporary Iranian society caught between tradition and modernity.
