Bishkek is the capital city of the former Soviet republic Kyrgyzstan. A modern, slightly run down industrial metropolis and home to the 13-years old Gulu. While her mother is working, Gulu looks after her younger siblings. Gulu is a lively teenager. She likes dancing, hangs out with her girl friends and fancies a boy. The sceptical view of Gulu and her girl friends concerning their future sounds realistic: anyone marrying a poor man will spend the rest of their life on the bazaar. To be married to a man with a normal family background is okay, but not more than that. To marry a rich man is not really an option either, because he will take a second wife. But the worst-case is the Kyrgyz tradition to kidnap girls and marry them to strangers.
