Ioujima gyokusaisen seikansha 61-nenThe Island of Death
Iwo Jima was one of the fiercest battlegrounds in the war between the U.S. and Japanese forces during WWII. On this small Pacific island, a one-month long clash began in February 1945, and only around 1,000 of the 21,000 Japanese troops on the island survived. The American troops were expecting strikes in the form of "banzai attacks". The truth, however, is that the Japanese troops were actually attempting a war of attrition without either supply or escape routes. 28,000 U.S. soldiers were also killed or injured in the hellish battlefield. The Island of Death examines records and newly obtained accounts from soldiers who fought on Iwo Jima to find out how the two military forces fought the battle and to reveal the horror of war.
