Indian Summer: The Oka Crisis
In order to expand a golf course, the Canadian city of Oka intends to raze a pine forest and build a parking lot over a Mohawk burial ground. The grounds belong to the city, but a handful of Mohawk Indians challenge this right: their ancestors had planted these pine trees and buried their dead here. Police move in to dismantle blockades by the Mohawk Indians: tragically, an officer is killed. Other Mohawks join the protest and block a bridge to Montreal. The ensuing violence leads to the largest deployment of Canadian troops since the Korean War. Based on recent events, this film relates the unresolved clash between cultures.
