Giacomo Battiato
Famous in Italy for his historical adaptations, Giacomo Battiato has just triumphed across Europe with his twin television biopics, Karol. I became a director in spite of myself, I became so excited about the filmmaking craft that I couldn’t live without shooting. If his passion is reconstructing the past, he also does more personal work - a video camera stands in for the diary of a frenzied and obsessed protagonist in his Diary of a Rapist (1996). In 2005, after initial reluctance due to his atheism, Battiato agreed to dramatize the life of Jean Paul II. He seems to have reached the peak of what television had to offer a director in Europe. Can he consider himself satisfied for all that?
