Faustus, the Last Night

Faustus, the Last Night, the fifth and latest opera by Pascal Dusapin, a French composer born in 1955, premiered on January 21st at the Staatsoper in Berlin. Embodied by effective and lyrical orchestrations, his seductive style is a blend of metaphysical despair, demiurgical quest and epic derision. The English libretto is inspired by Christopher Marlowe, as well as Shakespeare, Dante, Saint Augustine, Blake, Flaubert, Olivier Cadiot and Al Capone. The audience gave a standing ovation to this new-styled Faust, which in addition to the metaphysical tandem of Faust and Mephistopheles, adds a couple of wise men, Sly and Togod. One is free of human contingencies, the other of spiritual ones, while the Angel looks on in terror.
