In 1945, Ada Sereni left her three children in Palestine – where she had lived for eighteen years – and returned to Italy to search for her husband, Enzo. He had disappeared a year earlier after sneaking into Italy on a secret mission during World War II. While she continued her desperate search, she dedicated the rest of her energy to the dangerous pursuit of helping stateless Jews from all over Europe to reach Promised Land. She got 25,000 people out of Italy, loading them onto anything that would float. This was how a third of Europe's surviving Jews left Italy for their new home.
