Életek énekeThe Song of Lives
December 2005. In a village deep in Romania, a number of people are attending the funeral of a great Hungarian-born violinist, who has died aged 76. His death has brought together all the musicians in the region because they considered him their master. They don't know one another, they live far apart, yet all come from Transylvania. If their culture and backgrounds differ, their music does too. Yet here they are playing at the grave of their master. All, together. Different styles mingle. The master is gone but a new group is born. An orchestra of 27 musicians. Gypsies, Romanians, Hungarians, all of Transylvania is here. The Master's successor, Istvan Jambor, nicknamed "Dumnezeu" ("Dieu"), is the leader of the group from the village of Tchavach. He speaks rom. We meet him in his village. This great violinist describes his background and that of his group. Music is part of their lives, like air or food. It's simple, natural, vital and magical. One can see why they call him "God."
