Brecht - Die Kunst zu leben
This film is a vibrant portrayal of an artistic personality whose life and works are interwoven into the history of the 20th century. The young man from the southern German town of Augsburg first drew attention to himself with his play "Drums in the Night." He revolutionized the theatre in Berlin in the 1920s and 30s, fled from the Nazis via Scandinavia and the Soviet Union to the U.S., but returned to Europe in the McCarthy era and settled in the GDR. Brecht's personal life was also hectic. Although he was married, his female collaborators became his lovers, so that at times several women belonged to his household. Interviews with his children, his companions, and with contemporary eyewitnesses round off this portrait of one of the 20th century's leading dramatists.
